Overview

Tyres need to be able to perform on a range of terrains in all weathers. Manufacturers therefore need to recreate a variety of dynamic tests during the tyres development cycle to verify its performance.

In addition to this is the desire to prolong tyre life cycles and improve braking performance. With enhancements in tyre compounds and constructions getting smaller each year, manufacturers now need the ability to accurately measure changes.

VBOX is a powerful data acquisition system that can be used to perform a wide variety of tests. It is easy to set up, quick to use, and can provide measurements at up to ±2cm positional accuracy - allowing engineers to plot even the smallest improvements in performance.

It has the ability to be connected to a range of input and output modules, and allows for test data to be viewed quickly and easily using a laptop or tablet PC – reducing the time needed to analyse results.

Pass-by-Noise Testing

Overview

Pass-By (or Drive-By) Noise testing consists of a vehicle being driven past a microphone in acceleration and constant speed tests, on a high quality road surface, and in an open area to avoid sound reflections.

The subsequent sound readings must fall within parameters such as those set by European Directive 2007/45/EC and ISO 362, which set out how much engine and tyre noise produced by passenger and commercial vehicles is acceptable. Given the continued reduction of these noise limits, such testing is extremely important to vehicle and tyre manufacturers, and therefore requires very accurate and consistent measurement of speed and acceleration.

In addition to the vehicle speed and acceleration values, engine speed and throttle application must be logged, and the test is carried out over a prescribed distance as set out in the directive. To achieve the level of distance accuracy required, traditional testing methods require more than one operative and often use several light-barrier units placed at ten metre intervals; or make use of a DGPS Base Station. The former method can be problematic in consistency, as light-barrier triggering can be adversely affected by vehicle body angle or when the vehicle under test has uneven sides - such as a motorcycle. The latter, whilst providing very good positional accuracy, is expensive.

The Racelogic solution uses the VBOX distance measurement with accuracy of 0.05%, so over the 60m a Drive-by Noise Test is conducted this ensures a distance accuracy of 3cm. A single light barrier is used to trigger the start of the test and, being the only one, it can be placed closer to the passing vehicle, ensuring reliability. The VBOX will capture speed, acceleration, throttle position, and engine RPM as the test is performed, and can also record the output from specialist microphones, via Bluetooth radio telemetry, that are placed on the side of the track.

The VBOX system allows for one operative to conduct multiple tests and for each result – including the noise output – to be logged in the VBOX Tools software, greatly reducing the amount of track time required.

Overview

Evaluation of vehicle performance has been made considerably easier since the advent of GPS data logging. Traditional methods which called for the use of a fifth wheel or optical sensor added considerable complexity and time to a typical day's testing, but now VBOX equipment is employed to gather this information with a swiftness and ease that makes the job simple - whether it's just a few 0-60 runs, or something more complicated.

Although all VBOX systems are supplied with analysis software, it may not even be necessary to make use of it as products such as the VBOX Mini output results on a screen; or live data can be viewed on a laptop or tablet PC. For those wishing to extract results in greater detail all data is logged to flash media for later analysis.

Vehicle and tyre manufacturers, tier one suppliers, tuners, aftermarket and fabrication companies use VBOX to assess the performance of their products.

Coastdown Testing

Overview

Effective aerodynamics is an essential part of overall vehicle design and manufacturers can assess developments to the aerodynamics of their vehicles by performing a coastdown test.

This is a test in controlled conditions which measures the effects of wind and road resistance, based upon time taken for a vehicle to coast from one speed to another, with the engine in neutral gear.

A major problem associated with this testing is the requirement for a very long, flat test track, to allow sufficient time for the vehicle to coast from 125kph to 5kph (for example – range is user definable).

RACELOGIC has developed a coastdown software package for use with VBOX 3i to ensure that this test is repeatable and accurate.

It breaks the testing down into multiple user-definable segments, to allow the full range to be subject to the test without the need for an excessively long test track.

The coastdown software takes test data and performs statistical analysis in real time, to provide an immediate indication of when the required statistical accuracy has been met.

GPS/IMU integration for smoother accurate speed leads to more consistent results and shorter test time.

The ability to accurately measure speed is essential for any vehicle. Car drivers need to know how fast they are going so that they can keep within limits, and the increasing number of detection systems used to enforce speed limits has meant that speedometers need to be calibrated very accurately.

When prosecuting speeding offences, evidence must be presented that cannot be challenged: the accuracy of the device used to capture speed at the time of the offence has to be accurate.

The nature of speed detection is changing, along with some of its philosophy. Whilst safety remains the main reason for installing enforcement cameras along a stretch of road, other environmental factors are now making an impact.

Areas where parameters such as emissions and noise need to be controlled over a long distance have given rise to average speed detection units, ensuring that the lower traffic speed results in less noise and pollution. The distance measurements used to calibrate average speed cameras must therefore be extremely accurate.

Traction Control Development

VBOX3i-V2-V3VBOX logs all data necessary to evaluate the performance of traction control systems. It will for instance measure true vehicle speed and individual wheel speeds captured from CAN, ABS or wheel speed encoders. Performance Feel and Drivability

Objective data provided by VBOX equipment can be used to correlate subjective test results and can highlight test conditions that would otherwise not be quantifiable. VBOX will measure response delays, acceleration and jerk values.
