Tyre Testing

Publicado em Teste de desempenho

Overview

Tyres need to be able to perform on a range of terrains in all weathers. Manufacturers therefore need to recreate a variety of dynamic tests during the tyres development cycle to verify its performance.

In addition to this is the desire to prolong tyre life cycles and improve braking performance. With enhancements in tyre compounds and constructions getting smaller each year, manufacturers now need the ability to accurately measure changes.

VBOX is a powerful data acquisition system that can be used to perform a wide variety of tests. It is easy to set up, quick to use, and can provide measurements at up to ±2cm positional accuracy - allowing engineers to plot even the smallest improvements in performance.

It has the ability to be connected to a range of input and output modules, and allows for test data to be viewed quickly and easily using a laptop or tablet PC – reducing the time needed to analyse results.

Pass-By Noise Testing

Publicado em Teste de desempenho

Overview

Certification of vehicle noise emissions for passenger vehicles, motorcycles and light trucks is achieved by measuring external sound levels according to procedures defined by international standards such as ISO 362.

ISO 362 defines the pass-by test procedures for measuring noise emitted by accelerating road vehicles, and the ECE R41 (motorcycle) and R51 (automobile) standards regulate the limits of the vehicle exterior noise.

Racelogic is providing Pass-By (or Drive-By) Noise testing equipment to log channels such as engine RPM, vehicle velocity and maximum vehicle exterior noise to the accuracy requirements of this standard. The system can be installed in the vehicle for R51, allowing the driver to operate the measurement equipment without the need for additional operatives.

Additionally, the VBOX Test Suite software has been enhanced to include Pass-By Noise plugins allowing development programs to be completed to the ECE R41/ R51 standards, prior to homologation testing.

The software allows you to enter session-specific information that defines test conditions and vehicle details, including the requirement of kerb mass, power, idle rpm and rated engine rpm. This information is automatically saved to the log file and so only needs to be entered once; it can also be exported for use in another file, saving setup time.

Performance Testing

Publicado em Teste de desempenho

Overview

Evaluation of vehicle performance has been made considerably easier since the advent of GPS data logging. Traditional methods which called for the use of a fifth wheel or optical sensor added considerable complexity and time to a typical day's testing, but now VBOX equipment is employed to gather this information with a swiftness and ease that makes the job simple - whether it's just a few 0-60 runs, or something more complicated.

Although all VBOX systems are supplied with analysis software, it may not even be necessary to make use of it as products such as the VBOX Mini output results on a screen; or live data can be viewed on a laptop or tablet PC. For those wishing to extract results in greater detail all data is logged to flash media for later analysis.

Vehicle and tyre manufacturers, tier one suppliers, tuners, aftermarket and fabrication companies use VBOX to assess the performance of their products.

Acceleration Testing

VBOX MiniAll RACELOGIC data logging equipment is able to perform acceleration tests to determine 0-60, 0-100mph, ¼ mile, VMAX, G-forces data. Data is logged to a memory card and can be analysed with the supplied VBOX Tools software.

Test results are either displayed live on a PC, internal screen or additional display, depending on the product in use. You can get a 20Hz VBOX data logger from less than $500.

A Media Perspective

VBOX equipment is used by a number of motoring publications and broadcast companies. A large proportion of new vehicles are put through their paces by journalists configuring them for increasingly detailed analysis within the pages they create. Straight line acceleration and braking, lap times, cornering g-forces, and many more parameters are easily measured and disseminated for their readership.

Television production companies making programmes where performance timing or speed measurement is a requirement (such Northone TV, who produce the motoring show "Fifth Gear" - and who also filmed the 2014 series "Speed" featuring motorcycle racer Guy Martin - for broadcast in the UK) turn to VBOX data loggers thanks to their ease of use and reliability.

Coastdown Testing

Publicado em Teste de desempenho

Overview

Coastdown-testing

Effective aerodynamics is an essential part of overall vehicle design and manufacturers can assess developments to the aerodynamics of their vehicles by performing a coastdown test.

This is a test in controlled conditions which measures the effects of wind and road resistance, based upon time taken for a vehicle to coast from one speed to another, with the engine in neutral gear.

A major problem associated with this testing is the requirement for a very long, flat test track, to allow sufficient time for the vehicle to coast from 125 km/h to 5 km/h (for example – range is user definable).

vbts coastdownRACELOGIC has developed plugins for VBOX Test Suite to ensure that coastdown tests are repeatable and accurate. You can choose between three tests, the European WLTP GTR15, the American SAE J2263 and the Brazilian ABNT NBR 10312.

All tests enable you to break down the testing into multiple user-definable segments, to allow the full range to be subject to the test without the need for an excessively long test track.

Statistical analysis can be performed in real time, to provide an immediate indication of when the required statistical accuracy has been met.

GPS/IMU integration for smoother accurate speed leads to more consistent results and shorter test time.

Speed and Distance Verification

Publicado em Teste de desempenho

VBOX is the most accurate way of measuring speed, distance and acceleration, setting the standard for many years and used by almost every car manufacturer in the world.

Overview

The ability to accurately measure speed is essential for any vehicle. Car drivers need to know how fast they are going so that they can keep within limits, and the increasing number of detection systems used to enforce speed limits has meant that speedometers need to be calibrated very accurately.

Testing and Validating of Speed Measurement Equipment

When prosecuting speeding offences, evidence must be presented that cannot be challenged: the accuracy of the device used to capture speed at the time of the offence has to be accurate.

Speed-camera-testing

The nature of speed detection is changing, along with some of its philosophy. Whilst safety remains the main reason for installing enforcement cameras along a stretch of road, other environmental factors are now making an impact.

Areas where parameters such as emissions and noise need to be controlled over a long distance have given rise to average speed detection units, ensuring that the lower traffic speed results in less noise and pollution. The distance measurements used to calibrate average speed cameras must therefore be extremely accurate.

VBOX product can be used to easily test and validate speed measurement equipment like odometers, speed loops and speed cameras. The use of GPS allows this to be possible. Read more on how it works.

Traction Control Development

VBOX3i-V2-V3VBOX logs all data necessary to evaluate the performance of traction control systems. It will for instance measure true vehicle speed and individual wheel speeds captured from CAN, ABS or wheel speed encoders. Our test equipment adheres to the NHTSA Traction Control and Validation Test for heavy commercial vehicles. See also our article on ESC Testing.

Performance Feel and Drivability

Objective data provided by VBOX equipment can be used to correlate subjective test results and can highlight test conditions that would otherwise not be quantifiable. VBOX will measure response delays, acceleration and jerk values.
