VBOX Indoor Positioning System (VIPS) installed at the CARISSMA Research Centre

VBOX Indoor Positioning System (VIPS) has been successfully installed at the CARISSMA (Centre of Automotive Research on Integrated Safety Systems and Measurement Area) research facility at Ingolstadt Technical University. In this video, Professor Thomas Brandmeier, Scientific Director, CARISSMA, describes why VIPS was the best solution for their indoor testing and how they are putting it to use in support of their cutting-edge research.

The indoor test hall at CARISSMA is 100m long and 30m wide, allowing vehicles to reach up to 60km/h. To replicate real-world conditions, the hall also has the ability to create and control light and weather conditions including rain, mist and fog. Research conducted in the hall focuses on the testing and development of sensors for driver assistance and autonomous systems.

Previously, installations of optical and lidar systems had been attempted but these were unable to cope with the variation in weather and lighting conditions. VIPS was selected as it delivered highly accurate positioning and robustness in its ability to function independently of these conditions. Its ease of installation both in the hall and on the vehicles under test also made it an attractive solution.

The research scenarios utilise driving robots and other data gathering sensors and loggers. It was therefore essential that any solution offered easy compatibility with the wider test setup. VIPS is fully compatible with driving robots from all major manufacturers and with third party loggers from companies including GeneSys and OxTS.
