A great many aspects of vehicle testing can be conducted using a VBOX data logger, from simple performance evaluation through to complex development of the latest ADAS applications. GPS log rates range from 10Hz to 100Hz, and there are options for single, dual, or triple antenna systems - ideal for vehicle dynamics testing. Differential GPS and RTK solutions allow for high positional accuracy, and inertial measurement integration increases the testing scope further.

VBOX 3i | 100Hz Data Logger

Overview

VBOX 3i is the pinnacle of the VBOX product range. It uses a powerful GPS/GLONASS receiver logging data 100 times a second to achieve high level accuracy. 

VBOX3i HeadWith IMU integration, USB and Bluetooth connectivity, compact flash card logging and audio functionality for voice tagging, the VBOX 3i represents a flexible solution to a range of testing requirements.

IMU Integration

VBOX 3i has the ability to utilise data from a RACELOGIC IMU and uses a Kalman Filter to improve all parameters measured in real-time. IMU integration ensures accurate test results in areas of unreliable satellite reception, typically caused by trees, buildings and bridges.

The vehicle's body angles are also measured to a high accuracy without the need to use a dual antenna system. Dynamic overshoot is eliminated through lever arm correction.

Accuracy

Velocity and heading data are calculated from Doppler Shift in the GPS carrier signal, providing users with unparalleled accuracy. For example, over 10 tests between two light barriers placed exactly 1000m apart, the VBOX will report a distance within ±2-3cm, on every test, and the average comes out to within less than 1cm. Impressive for a device using satellites 18,000kms away!

Brake distance accuracy is equally impressive, using a brake pedal mounted trigger input, VBOX 3i will measure the braking distance to within ±1.8cm for a typical 100-0kph brake stop. More about GPS accuracy.

VBOX 3i comes in three versions, single antenna, dual antenna and (dual antenna) RTK. In conjunction with a DGPS Base Station (Option 1) VBOX 3i Single Antenna can achieve a positional accuracy of 80cm.

VBOX Mini | 10Hz Data Logger

Overview

VBOX MiniA versatile product featuring a 10Hz GPS engine, built-in GPS antenna, SD card logging and a back-lit LCD screen.

Easy to fit, but brimming with features, the VBOX Mini is very popular with magazines and test departments all over the world.

VBOX Mini provides a very quick and convenient method of obtaining accurate performance results, a max, average and real-time speed display, in-car timing with splits, and is also a great little data logger!

To further enhance the VBOX Mini, an optional input/output module is available for collection of data from external signal sources such as throttle position or engine RPM.

The data is recorded onto the flash memory card and can be output via a direct PC link in real-time for live viewing in the included VBOX Tools software.

The VBOX 3i RTK is an RTK enabled version of the VBOX 3i Dual Antenna which can be used in conjunction with an RTK differential Base Station to obtain ±2cm positional accuracy.

This top-of-the-range data logger combines all the advantages of a twin antenna GPS setup with GLONASS satellite tracking and can be used in any number of vehicle tests where positional accuracy and repeatability are of the utmost importance.

For tests where positional accuracy is of key importance, like lane departure testing, distance to a fixed object, or precise mapping, the VBOX 3i RTK offers industry-leading 2cm positional accuracy, in real time, at 100Hz!

VBOX 3i RTK is the key data acquisition unit of the RACELOGIC ADAS Test Systems for measuring vehicle separation, time to collision, position within a lane, and more to 2cm precision.

Slip and Pitch/Roll measurement using two antennas

Utilising two GPS/GLONASS antennas, the VBOX 3i RTK measures all of the normal VBOX GPS parameters, plus the azimuth and elevation between the antennas, i.e. the direction the antennas are pointing, and the angle between them measured from the horizontal. This allows the unit to measure slip angle, and also pitch angle (or roll angle depending on how the antennas are mounted), all at 100Hz.

Both the VBOX and the Base Station track the Russian GLONASS range of navigation satellites as well as the normal GPS constellation, using almost twice as many measurements for accurate results and reception in areas of poor satellite visibility. Read more on VBOX GPS accuracy.

A Dual Antenna Mounting Pole (needs to be ordered separately) ensures optimum antenna separation and the most accurate attitude measurement.

VBOX IISX Dual Antenna | 20Hz

Overview

VBOXIISX-Dual-AntennaThe VBOX IISX Dual Antenna has all the features of a  VBOX IISX single antenna version, but contains a second GPS engine.

By using two GPS engines configured in a 'fixed baseline RTK setup', extra parameters such as slip and pitch angle (or in an alternative configuration roll angle) can be measured.

Due to its small size and simple installation, VBOX IISX is ideally suited for use in cars, bikes, off road vehicles and boats.

If you don't want to use a Base Station, then the VBOX IISX range of GPS data loggers gives the highest 'stand alone' positional accuracy of our range, utilising the free WAAS/EGNOS correction service to give <1m positional accuracy.

Positional accuracies of 40cm (standard) or 20cm (optional) are also available when used in conjunction with a Racelogic DGPS Base Station.

VBOX LapTimer | 10Hz Data Logger

Overview

VBOX-LapTimerVBOX LapTimer is a 10Hz GPS data logger and OLED display in one.

It provides real-time display of live speed, lap count, max. speed, lap times, or predictive lap times (delta time).

The data is calculated at all times, even if it is not displayed and is stored onto an SD card for later examination.

Overview

VBOX3iSL-with-VBOX-ManagerA VBOX 3i Dual Antenna (VB3iSL) uses a GPS/GLONASS receiver to achieve high level accuracy and thanks to the twin antennas has the ability to measure slip and pitch/roll angles at 100Hz.

The system is so accurate that it can even detect the difference a side wind makes to the slip angle measurement, a feat that even the very best inertial systems cannot currently replicate. Watch a demo video here.

Higher accuracy with GPS and GLONASS

In addition to GPS, the VB3iSL tracks the Russian GLONASS range of satellites. The advantage of using both satellite constellations is that there are almost twice as many satellites in view, helping to maintain a robust satellite connection and increasing the accuracy of the system.
